Memorials

Since House with a Heart opened in 2006, we have said good-bye to over ninety of our cherished residents. They will always remain in our hearts and we are eternally grateful for the time we had them in our lives. We find comfort in knowing we fulfilled our mission by providing them all with a loving home for the last years of their lives.  On this page we honor some of these special friends.

  • Happy – Memorial

    Age: 22

Our boy Happy is true to his name. This jovial and bouncy Bichon Frise enjoyed every minute of his life, despite the fact that he lost the use of his back legs. Unfortunately, neurological consults and physical therapy confirmed that his condition couldn’t be corrected. But Happy didn’t let it stop him! He ran races in his “doggie wheels,” and make his way around the Sanctuary on his own.

Our Dear Happy crossed over the bridge today. His most recent blood work indicated that his liver tumor had started to bleed internally. We did not want him to suffer so Emily brought her beloved Forever Foster to the Sanctuary and John and Lori fed him the Happy Meal that Em got for him and Peaceful Passage helped our boy to slip away peacefully. Hearts are broken here today!! and most especially heartbroken is his BELOVED Emily!!! January 18, 2022

  • Russell – Memorial Forever Foster

    Age: 20

Russell came to House with a Heart as a Hospice Foster for LovePaws. In his original home, he had a terrible fall down a flight of stairs, and perhaps as a result he suffered sudden blindness which made him anxious and afraid.

His senior Owner could no longer care for him and thankfully LovePaws placed him with HWAH.

Love, proper medication, and 24/7 care gave Russell a chance at a full and happy life. We have all loved and laughed at this adorable Yorkie with so much spunk and total CUTENESS!!

On January 4th, 2022,  a tumor on his liver caused Russell to begin to bleed internally, and we had no choice but to let him go. Thankfully Emily was available to rush him to our Vet where they helped him to pass peacefully.

This little guy left a big hole in our hearts!!!

  • Short Stuff – Memorial “Buster’s Buddies”

    Age: 19

Short Stuff and his sissy,  Precious Soul were in a Mississippi shelter and were transferred to a Virginia shelter. Our rescue partner LovePaws came forward and took in these two adorable seniors. Because of their health issues, they needed a safe place to live out their lives showered with love. So we agreed to foster and love them. Shorty was blind, but he was fearless! He had no problem getting up on the furniture and finding another dog to snuggle with.  In October of 2021 after a swift decline in his health, Short Stuff passed with the help of Dr. Handel in the loving arms of our volunteer Frances.  He was little and loud and oh so LOVED!!

  • Jamison – Memorial

    Age: 25

Jamison (a.k.a. Jamie) was rescued from a local hoarding situation in January 2016. He was taken to the Montgomery County (Maryland) Animal Services and Adoption Center and stayed there for about two months. He came to HWAH in March 2016.

Jamie’s had major surgery to remove a tumor from his chest as well as one of his eyes.  But since moving in with his Forever Foster family – Susan, Joe and furry friends – Jamie had found a new “leash on life!”  Thanks to so much love and wonderful care, Jamie lived to be 21 years old! He knew what love was in the end.

Farewell, Master, yet not farewell.
Where I go, ye too shall dwell.
I am gone, before your face, A moment’s time, a little space.
When ye come where I have stepped,
Ye will wonder why ye wept.
